| The
Providence Police Department provides a wide variety of
services and performs many functions. As a result, we
come into contact with hundreds of citizens each day who
may have concerns and questions regarding those services.
This page highlights some of those questions that many
people have had in the past. If you still have a question
or if the answer doesn't quite answer your particular
concern, please call us at 272-3121 ext. 6188. |

Q: My
car was towed! How do I get it back? |
|
A: If
your car was towed by this department, come to the police
station and go to the Vehicle Recovery Recovery Unit,
located on the first floor. Unless your car was towed
as a result of a criminal act, you can probably get
it back that same day. |
| |
|
Q: Will
my car be at the police station? |
|
A: No.
Your car was towed by a private towing company contracted
by the City of Providence. It will be at their tow yard.
Operating hours of the tow yards are regulated and you
can call the Vehicle Recovery Unit for information about
times and fees associated with your tow. |
| |
| Q: How
do I make a police report? |
| A: If
you have an emergency call the police at 272-1111. We
will respond to wherever you are. If you have a need for
the police and need us to respond and it isn't an emergency,
call 272-3121. We will respond, but it may take a little
longer. If you need to make a report and circumstances
don't require a police response to the scene, you may
respond to the Providence Police Department's central
station office to fill out a report. |
| |
| Q: When
are you open? |
| A: We
are always open. |
| |
| Q: How
can I get a copy of my police report? |
| A: You
may get a copy of your police report by responding to
the police station and going to the Records
Bureau. They usually have a copy of your report on
file 48 hours after the incident was reported. Sometimes
it may take a little longer, depending on the circumstances
and nature of the report. A call to the Records Bureau
may save you a wasted trip. |
| |
| Q: How
much will the report cost me? |
| A: Reports
cost 15 cents per page. |
| |
| Q: There
is suspicious activity in my neighborhood. Who can I report
this to? |
| A: If
it's something that needs immediate attention call 272-1111
or 272-3121 and a uniformed police officer will respond
according to the circumstances. If it is something that
an undercover detective could handle more effectively
then ask the dispatcher to connect you with the appropriate
bureau. If you're not sure of who to speak with, ask for
the Desk Sergeant, who will direct your call to the proper
office. You can check the Department
Directory Page for a listing of whom to ask for. |
| |
| Q: A
police officer was rude to me! Who can I talk to about
this? |
| A:
Unfortunately, we get calls
like this. While most of out officers are honest, hard
working and courteous, some may, from time to time say
and do the wrong things. The Internal
Affairs Bureau are the people that you may want to
talk to. Their job is to investigate police misconduct.
The numbers for the various detectives are listed in the
Department Directory section
of this web site. |
| |
| Q: How
do I register my alarm? |
| A:
Refer to the Alarm
Registration Unit page for complete instructions. |
| |
| Q: Where do I get a VIN Inspection ? |
| A:
Go to the VIN Inspection Station on Ernest Street. |
