The
Providence Police Department's Mounted Command is part
of the Patrol Special Services Bureau. The primary duty
of the Mounted Command is to support the Patrol Bureau
by enforcing all state laws and municipal ordinances,
answering calls for service, providing citizen assistance,
directing traffic congestion, issuing parking violations,
safely controlling unruly crowds, affecting arrests of
violators and bearing witness in their prosecution in
our courts.
The
unit, staffed by 10 officers, including Inspector Luis
DelRio, who serves as its director, continues to work
three different shifts. The day shift, which runs from
0900 hours until 1700 hours. (9:00 AM until 5:00 PM) An
"Out First" shift, which runs from 1600 hours
until Midnight is also worked as a regular tour of duty.
These tours of duty are worked on a daily basis at various
locations throughout the city. Areas patrolled by the
Mounted Command include the downtown area, Thayer Street
and Wickenden Street areas, Federal Hill, Broad Street
and Roger Williams Park. Midshift hours (8 PM until 4AM)
are worked in the Downcity area on Thursday through Saturday.
Mounted officers pay particular attention to nightclub
areas, The Jewelry District, the Providence Performing
Arts Center, Trinity Repertory Company, Convention Center,
Dunkin Donuts Center and Veterans Memorial Auditorium
Arts and Cultural Center.
